It looks like it’s #mayomonday and I couldn’t be happier. I wasn’t supposed to be in Jacksonville on Friday. I’d been visiting my mom @e.j.swallow after @pensacolapensacon and I was supposed to be on a plane to New York for a table read. The reading got postponed, so I rebooked my flight for Saturday to head back to LA. Turns out I was supposed to be in Jacksonville after all, and God knew that. Mom woke up with chills and a headache but didn’t seem to have a fever. She had trouble staying warm all day, but it was blustery here so we didn’t think too much of it. She was super tired all day, but it has been a stressful time with the move and it’s that time of year when colds and flu are going around, so she wasn’t overly concerned. But then, later that night, she started shaking violently and became disoriented and started slurring her speech. She is sharp as a tack, so this was WAY out of character. I called my brother to come over but when I told him what was going on, he wisely suggested I call 911. They were there in a heartbeat and whisked Mom over the the @mayoclinic. @swallzz and I sat in the ER and they quickly performed multiple tests with alacrity and care. Turns out Mom had viral meningitis. Had my change in plans not kept me there, I shudder to think what might have happened. I am so grateful that a seemingly inconvenient change in plans kept me there, and SO grateful to the incredible care she has received at Mayo. She gets to go home today. Last weekend at @centralfloridacomiccon, I raffled off an autographed Funko AND this original set piece from the musical #themysteryofedwindrood, which was produced by @theatrejacksonville while I was in high school. The original winner had already left, and Rosa Bud is too delicate a flower to be mailed with the Funko Pop, so winner #2, Lionel, gave her a good home. I am frequently asked about my favorite projects, and folks at conventions are often surprised that one of the adventures I consider to be the most formative was a play about ice fishing and Greek gods. That play, Nice Fish, was directed in tandem by Mark Rylance and his wife, Claire Van Kampen. We lost Claire to cancer last weekend, but for this week’s #thisisthewaywednesday, I want to share with you all that we’ve gained in having her walk this earth. I was intimidated to work with Mark, an actor I’d long watched from afar and considered a genius (which he is). But the rehearsal environment fostered by he and Claire was one of equality and boundless imagination. Claire is no less a genius than Mark—a gifted musician and writer, she brought our cast and creative team together in complete trust and support. There was no hierarchy of imagination In the process and we never doubted that she wanted us to thrive. I was the only gal in a male-heavy cast, and Claire was there to be my advocate and to encourage me to open up in those moments when I wanted to fortify and be invulnerable. Throughout her career, Claire mentored younger artists and fostered these same creative environments where stories could come alive with authenticity and depth. I was absolutely delighted to introduce @chadkimball76 to her and Mark in 2017 on a trip to the UK; she treated him like family from the start. Yes, it’s Thursday. But the timeliness of this need makes it my #thisisthewaywednesday post (and don’t we need it every day of the week???) I’d wanted to highlight @samaritanspurse as it is, and now there is a time-sensitive need for volunteers in LA: “URGENT update from Samaritan’s Purse Fire Response in the Palisades: The city is now pushing forward with Phase #2, which is debris removal—this means properties may begin being cleared as early as next week. Once this phase starts, homes will be bulldozed, and we’ll no longer be able to assist those homeowners in recovering any remaining belongings. If you’ve been considering volunteering, now is the time. We want to help as many homeowners as possible before their properties are cleared. Email Mariana at [email protected] or visit https://spvolunteer.org for more details!” I’ve gotten to talk with some of the volunteers who come from all over the country to assist homeowners in recovering belongings after the fires. They sleep on cots and sift through the wreckage daily, trying to bring hope and relief to those affected. Samaritan’s Purse has always been sturdy and generous presence in US disaster relief efforts. I am in awe of the humble, steady flow of willing volunteers who walk The Way and show love for their neighbors when they are at their lowest point.
