️⃣ Parabens & Phthalates: Parabens are commonly used as preservatives to prevent bacterial growth in cosmetics, while phthalates are used to increase the flexibility and softness of plastics in products. Both are known endocrine disruptors and have been linked to reproductive issues and other health concerns. Look for words ending in -paraben (e.g., methylparaben) and avoid products listing ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ without specifying natural sources, as phthalates are often hidden under these terms.

️⃣ PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols): Used as thickeners, solvents, and softeners in skincare products, PEGs are petroleum-based compounds that may be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, both known carcinogens. They can also strip the skin of its natural moisture, leading to increased skin permeability and vulnerability. Look for ‘PEG’ followed by a number (e.g., PEG-40, PEG-100).

️⃣ Synthetic Fragrances: The term ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ can represent a complex mixture of dozens of chemicals. These undisclosed ingredients may include allergens, hormone disruptors, and respiratory irritants. To avoid these hidden chemicals, choose products labeled as ‘fragrance-free’ or those that use natural essential oils.

️⃣ Formaldehyde-Releasing Agents: Certain preservatives in skincare products release formaldehyde over time, a chemical classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure can lead to skin irritation and allergic reactions. Common formaldehyde-releasing agents include DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and quaternium-15. Check for those names to reduce exposure.

️⃣ Petroleum-Based Ingredients: Derived from crude oil, these substances are used for their moisturizing properties. However, they can clog pores, potentially leading to acne, and may contain impurities if not properly refined. Common examples include mineral oil, petrolatum, and paraffin. Look for these terms and consider opting for products that use plant-based oils instead.
