A voice for more voices 🌟 Rita Moreno has long been a star on-stage, and a heroine in real life. As the first Latina to win the venerated EGOT prize, and a fiercely outspoken advocate for representation, her most important role to date is being the role model she never had. Barbie is proud to honor the actress and activist as the newest doll in the Barbie Tribute Collection, inspiring future generations to step into the spotlight. #Barbie

Rita Moreno brought a bit of New Orleans to Northern California as she celebrated her 93rd birthday. The ‘West Side Story’ icon was the guest of honor at a Mardi Gras-themed birthday party in the Berkeley area on Dec. 7, four days before her actual birthday. “How remarkable it is to be 93 and still enjoy all the good things in life!” Moreno tells PEOPLE. How bout an elevator pic!? Here with my gorgeous family who came to celebrate me at the @academymuseum gala this past weekend – I’m so lucky to have them!
My Dear Friends, I saw a film last night that you cannot afford to miss! It’s called Sing Sing & it stars and is produced by Colman Domingo. I beg you not to miss it. It is an amazing film and an astonishing experience very briefly, it’s about a theater and acting program at this infamous prison, and all about the humanity of people who are incarcerated, but still have souls worth looking into and sympathizing with. Oh wow I cannot tell you what an acting treat you’re in for. The performances are just superb! , DO NOT MISS this experience! You will thank me!! I’d like to hear from you after you’ve seen it.
On today’s episode of Wiser Than Me, Julia connects with EGOT-winning actress, singer, and dancer Rita Moreno on her 93rd birthday. The two discuss why Rita almost backed out of her Oscar-winning turn as Anita in West Side Story and the complex emotions Rita experienced after her husband of 45 years passed away. Julia and Rita also bond over the fact that they both find Mel Brooks sexy. Later, Julia talks with her 90-year-old mom, Judith, about seeing the original West Side Story on Broadway and how musicals can be an important vehicle for storytelling.
I applaud Nava Mau, a talented Latina transgender woman, for breaking through another ceiling. She is the first trans woman to receive an Emmy nomination for supporting actress in a limited series or movie for her starring role playing a trans woman in the critically acclaimed Netflix series, Baby Reindeer. Brava Nava! for shining a light on the diversity of real life relationships.
