Shibani Bedi Instagram – “Tell us about how you 1st met?”
Varsha: “It was an arranged marriage in 1984. He & his family came home & chatted with my family for a few hours. I didn’t even see him that day, I was too shy. But when his family called u saying, ‘Humaare taraf se rishta pakka hai,’ I panicked. I thought, ‘What if my freedom is gone?’
Arvind: “I didn’t know that…”
Varsha: “Haa… but then I met him for the first time at a cafe. He opened the door, pulled out a chair & listened to everything I said. By the end, I knew he was the one! So when the date for the wedding was fixed, mujhe koi aitraaz nahi tha…”
Arvind: “This was 40 years ago, but I still remember the wedding day like it was yesterday. You know that shaadi waali photo has a very funny story… iski ek cousin iske face ko ghungat se dhak rahi thi – she just wouldn’t stop. The photographer got annoyed & said, ‘Madam hatao isse, yeh nahi chalega.’ That’s when I got to look at her, she was so beautiful…still is!”
Varsha: “I was feeling so shy, but he wouldn’t stop staring. He’s still so affectionate – I love that about him!”
Arvind: “And I love that she’s always there for me. Once, in an accident, I suffered temporary memory loss. I was in the middle of the road, & everyone kept asking, ‘Naam kya hai?’ But the only thing I could remember was, ‘My wife’s name is Varsha.’
Hours later, when I got my memory back, she was by my side. And once we got home, she got back to her routine of worrying about me: ‘Have your food!’ ‘Have your meds!’”
Varsha: “He’s still just like a kid. Ab bhi bolna padta hai, ‘Arvind dawa le lo’ Par ab aadat ho gai hai mujhe!”
“40 years is such a long time! What’s your secret?”
Arvind: “You just have to keep your ego aside…”
Varsha: “You should also know how to be there for each other. When I would be stuck at work, I would think, ‘Bacho ka kya hoga,’ ‘Khana…’ But he’d say, ‘Main sambhal lunga.’
Arvind: “And she’s been there for me! Earlier this year, when I had major health issues, she was there… holding my hand through doctor appointments & tests… So when you ask what’s the secret to these years…Hum bas ek team hai.
