Amruta Subhash Instagram – Wounds run deep and they take time to heal. And when you battle amnesia, the struggle with your demons comes in waves . That’s how you see Neena Kulkarni battle with her twilight years in the Marathi play Asen mee nasen me. Written with sensitivity and empathy in equal measure playwright Sandesh Kulkarni makes us empathise with the struggles of old age and a gradually losing world. At the heart of this struggle is the combative mother- daughter tale. The daughter played with sharpness and yet a vulnerable broken side is the ever dependable Amruta Subhash. She invests her character with a deep understanding of a woman grappling with a parent fast losing her mind. In an equally challenging role is Shubhani Gokhale (she plays dual roles with acuity). She raises all the laughs and earns your respect too. The dynamics between her and Kulkarni are spot on. One of the best qualities of #Asenmeenasenmee is that it’s not a weepie. The women are strong resilient and deal with the cards that life has dealt them with aplomb.
Subhash also takes on the mantle of director and invests Asen Mee Nasen Mee with maturity and a depth seldom seen in recent theatre. Front lining this equal parts funny and disturbing play is Ofcourse the formidable Neena Kulkarni. She shows us yet again how it’s done. She’s plucky and poignant in turns and her voice projection is bang on.
Asen me Nasen me deals with heartbreaking reality of dementia. The heroine is gradually losing her control over her mind and memories. The memories come rushing back and in a truce they fade away. For anyone dealing with the ache of old and impending loneliness with parents, siblings and loved ones will find a resonance. And in that resonance, you will find assurance and hope. All is not lost. | Posted on 10/Jan/2025 19:37:25
