Amy Sherald Instagram – @asherald and @jonbatiste first met through a mutual friend—one of Sherald’s best-known subjects whom the pair simply call “Michelle.”
Batiste, winner of multiple Grammys and an Academy Award, first met the Obamas when they produced “American Symphony,” the documentary about his album of the same name. Sherald’s portrait of the former first lady earned her the grand prize in the 2016 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition from the National Portrait Gallery—making her both the first woman and first African American to do so. For their cover story in CULTURED’s Artists on Artists issue, the friends met up for a candid discussion about the pressures that come with accessing such rarefied air.
