August Kamp Instagram – this slideshow contains six looping animated artworks with audio accompaniment. feel free to take a moment to flip through them first, but please also take a moment to read below how they were created.

these are all original artworks by my mother, @verityfreebern – created over the course of the last 10 years amongst countless other works, and selected nearly at random – by me – to be photographed hastily with my phone.

these photographs were put through an artificial intelligence system that treats the input image as a “starting frame” and creatively imagines five to eight seconds worth of subsequent frames. the result is motion.
.
since the system was given no text instructions, the prompt technically consists of just the image. this leaves the entire scope of creative decision-making in the hands of the ai model. it literally just thinks about what that image would look like in motion, then it takes a crack at rendering that.

lastly, another ai model is used to create the foley, music, and general sound design. this model watches the motion of the clip and imagines an audio accompaniment to enrich the presence of the piece.

none of the original works here were composed or created with ai, but the way they are being shared with you was a careful collaboration between people and systems. it was also a fun call to revisit some beautiful old works by my mom.
