Debra Messing Instagram – VALENTINES Redefined~
Yes, I know it was days ago. But to be honest, I have been struggling. I feel the chaos swirling around me, not knowing what day it is, whose birthday I’ve missed, grateful for little wins, numbed by the losses. You too?
I find myself asking the question, “Who am I?”
It’s very untethering to have that question answered, with utter certainty, by people who don’t even know me.
But the question is pressing.
I know I am good friend, a loving mother. A storyteller, an animal lover. I know I come alive when I am in far off countries learning about other cultures. I am a deep feeler, an advocate for any peace loving human. I love to play games and laugh so hard I can’t breathe.
How does this have any to do with. Valentine’s Day. Well, like other holidays for example Father’s Day or Christmas, it can be a complex day. One that brings up all sorts of emotions, not to mention, the idea of worth. And I think we need to redefine Valentines.
I looked up the definition and it said” to admire someone (something) affectionately.” Now THAT I can get behind! Our lives are filled with Valentines. You are a Valentine, I am a Valentine. BeHaving in a way that engenders admiration and affection is something we can all do, every day, WITHOUT any damn Hallmark card.
I miss my mom today. She’s the last picture in my carousel.
Who am I? I am my mother and father’s child. (His picture is the 2nd to last.) I am everything they are and every ancestor before them who taught their children for millennia.
I’m still finding my way, but I feel so blessed that I know where to start.
