Attempting to erase gun violence doesn’t erase reality. The DOJ has scrubbed a report detailing public mass shootings in the US from 1966–2019—and the histories of 172 mass shooters—from its site.
The page featured a database from The Violence Project, and noted that findings support gun safety laws like secure firearm storage and Red Flag laws. Some notable data points included:
• Sixteen of the 20 deadliest mass shootings in modern history occurred between 1999–2019, and half of those 16 between 2014–2019.
• Mass shootings claimed an average of eight lives per year in the 1970s. From 2010–2019, the average was 51 deaths per year.
• One in five mass shooters studied other mass shooters, and many are radicalized online.
• Most mass shooters had a history of violence (62.8%), including domestic violence (27.9%).
