I had a great time meeting everyone in Austin last night. Below is the setlist from yesterday‘s performance, and I’ve also included the talking I didn‘t have time to share. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon! 1.天已經要光/Before Dawn 2.街仔路雨落袂停/At a Rainy Night 3.咱/Us 4.留佇咱的血內底/Remains in Our Blood – My lyrics are in both Mandarin and Taiwanese. In Taiwan, Taiwanese language nearly faded away due to the complex colonial history. Now, young generation are slowly beginning to reconnect with it. The next song I’m about to perform is “How the Brain Got Language.” It’s based on a story from the novel “The Land of Bitter Rain “by Taiwanese author Wu Ming-Yi. My song shares the same title as the story. It’s about a boy with autism. His mother is the only one who never gave up on trying to understand him. One day, his mother discovered that he had a talent for bird language, so she supported him all the way in his studies until he became a researcher of bird language system . Shortly after his mother’s death, the boy became very ill and lost his hearing. He was left in complete solitude. One day, he decided to pull himself together and joined a sign language class. There, he made real friends for the first time in his life. He started to have this strong desire that he wanted to share the beauty of bird language to his classmates, with the sign language they shared. And finally he made it. in the end, everyone are able to simulate bird language with the sign languages they know. I wrote this song in both Taiwanese and Mandarin. And this story inspired me to write an entire album in Taiwanese. – 5.人如何學會語言/How the Brain Got Language 6.金黃色的/Golden 7.玉仔的心/Jade 8.新世紀的女兒/Daughters
