Absolutely no one elected Elon Musk to anything. Yesterday, Democratic leaders called on their Republican colleagues to help stop his billionaire power grab. Make sure your Republican elected officials and neighbors hear from you about this crisis, too.

America has had few greater advocates for women and reproductive health than Cecile Richards. Her legacy will be the countless lives she touched and the generations of women she inspired to follow in her footsteps. I’m thinking of her family and friends today and holding you close to my heart. Photo: @barbarakinney
Thinking of this quote from President Carter as we head to his memorial today.
In the days ahead, let’s take Dr. King’s words to heart and do our part to work toward a more just country and world for everyone.
Trump’s executive order to stop all federal grant funding—trillions of dollars of taxpayer money—is a five-alarm fire for our Constitutional system of government and for millions of Americans’ lives. We need our members of Congress to push back on this immediately. What you can do: Call your representatives and urge them to fight back. You can use the script attached to this post when calling. The number to the Capitol switchboard is (202) 224-3121. Here’s more on why this is so dangerous. Trump is saying he has the power to stop distributions of taxpayer money that Congress has approved. It’s a blatantly illegal order outside of the president’s constitutional authority. By calling for something so clearly not in his power, Trump is daring Congress to defend their power over the nation’s purse. Trump’s dictatorial push has huge, real consequences for people all over the country. What do trillions of dollars in federal grants touch? Programs that keep people fed, clothed, and educated—including in red states: – Nutrition assistance for women and children – Medicaid – School meals – Head start grants – Housing vouchers If a foreign body did this to our government and to our people, we would rightfully call it an attack. Do not let this stand. Call your representatives today.
I was honored to speak at a celebration of Cecile Richards’ life today. Cecile knew there is no finish line in the march for justice. There are no permanent victories in politics—no moment when you sit back and say, “Well, that’s it, we won! It’s over!” Because there is always more work to be done—both to move us forward and to stop us from being moved backward. It hurts to think Cecile won’t be with us to see the day we restore reproductive rights across America. Or finally unionize hotel workers in New Orleans. Or even elect the first woman president. But because of her, those days will eventually come. In recent years, Cecile had started wearing friendship bracelets with meaningful messages. One, which she wore every day, read: “Keep going.” She knew, as I know: It is not always easy to keep going. I know there were lots of times when Cecile just wanted to get in bed and pull the covers up over her head. Or tune out the news and spend a couple months doing nothing but reading mystery novels or making pies. But she never did. Instead, after every win, she kept going. After every loss, she kept going. Even being diagnosed with brain cancer did not stop her. She co-founded a new organization, @AbortioninAmerica, to share the stories of people impacted by abortion bans. She traveled to Louisiana on the weekends to meet with women who had been denied essential health care, then fly back to New York for another week of grueling treatment, making calls from the hospital. Just a couple weeks ago, she was hard at work again, planning to bring together hundreds of storytellers, journalists, and advocates next month in Austin. She wanted to make sure that gathering happened, whether or not she could be there. Scripture tells us: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Or, as Cecile said: “When you’re fighting for justice, you lose, you lose, you lose—and then you win.” So what choice is there but to keep going? When you’re discouraged, keep going. When things are hard, keep going. When you get knocked down, get back up and keep going. One thing I’m absolutely sure about is that Cecile wanted us to keep going. So we will.
Many Americans are totally unaware that critical government systems people rely on—which run on (and funnel!) taxpayer dollars—are being smashed and grabbed. I’ve linked an article in my Stories that summarizes what’s going on. Please share it with friends and family so they help demand action.
Keep up the pressure on your lawmakers: Americans won’t stand for Musk’s power grab.
Trump made a push for dictatorial power. We, the people, fought back—and we won. He’ll try again. But this is a crucial victory. Thank you to everyone who made your voices heard.
Women’s rights are human rights.
Trump’s illegal power grab is going to kill Americans. If you’ve already called your senators and urged them to act, thank you. If you haven’t yet, now’s the time for them to hear from you: They’ve got to use every lever available to shut down Trump’s power grab. “Any country that holds back women… is just hurting itself.” We marked the 30th anniversary of the UN 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing at @ColumbiaIGP this week with @HillaryClinton, @GIWPS, @GWLVoices, @VitalVoices, @Wellesley, world leaders, and young activists. Moving forward on gender equality is not just the right thing to do – it’s directly linked to a country’s economic prosperity. Watch the full event at the link in @ColumbiaIGP’s bio.

The Trump/Musk budget plan takes your money and your services to pay for tax cuts for the 1%. We still have the power to stop this. Make sure your representatives keep hearing from you!
