For the latest addition of LD’s Reading List, I’m spilling the beans (or more like the carrots and cucumbers) on my life as a pig mother. I’m telling you a bit about what it’s like raising mini-pigs (NOT micro pigs because spoiler, they don’t stay minuscule forever) as a way into this list of favorite books on the human/animal connection. To read, subscribe to the Good Thing Going Reader in the link in bio. *If you’re considering bringing a mini-pig into your home, do not pass go without following my girl @autumnacresminipetpigs to take her behavioral and health classes- these animals are a true commitment but a joyful one. And check out the heroic @pigplacementnetwork for piggies looking for their forever homes all over America. 🐽🐷🐖

Dying my own hair was a trade mark of my teens, when I’d self soothe with endless bottles of @manicpanicnyc, staining my hands and face fuschia and ruining everything that came into contact with the whirlwind of my budding self-definition. Blue, pink, green, brown, maroon- am I this girl? How about this one? These days, I do it carefully, dabbing Vaseline on my hairline, using a dedicated comb and towels that won’t show the muddy tracks of my vanity quite so much. Not sure exactly what this means, but it must have something to do with growing up. Everything does.

Hello friends, colleagues and lovers both current and former! We are thrilled to tell you that @goodthinggoingprods is heading to your inbox with the Good Thing Going Reader. Our newsletter is a considered collection of book recommendations, along with behind-the-scenes glimpses, favorite links, important Etsy discoveries and whispered dreams from Lena and the Good Thing Going team—published with intention rather than routine. This month, we take *Lena’s Book Club* over there (we know there are a lotta glamorous book clubs for you to choose from, but this is the premiere one for those who have taken Lexapro on and off for many years and often say the wrong thing at parties.) So please, join us (link to subscribe in bio)- it’s free for you and fun for us both. P.S. As for the photo, you really haven’t lived until you’ve sat on a heating bad reading your pet mini-pig a twisty thriller.

How it started vs. how it’s going… From our first ever selfie to the most recent of many… From our first sleepover to our roughly 1000th… From one dog to nine freaky animals and a cozy life making art and a home (and making home into an art…) I love everything about sharing this world and whatever comes after with you, Lulu. 4 years 🏆 I vote 4 more and endless terms in office for us @attawalpa ❤️🥹❤️

Nothing (not even a case of Laryngitis that had me sounding like Elaine Stritch shouting 4am requests to a Vegas DJ) could stop me from heading over to #NextOnNetflix to share a sneak peek of my new show Too Much, created with @attawalpa, starring @megsstalter and Will Sharpe. And as if that weren’t exciting enough, @goodthinggoingprods has partnered with @netflix for an exclusive first look deal to create television across a range of genres and formats, in both the US and the UK. It’s rare to find those who believe in you creatively and put all their might behind your voice and vision, and our team at Netflix has done all that and more. But I do have a bone to pick with them- I still have not received an invitation to join The Oppenheim Group OR Squid Games: The Challenge:( Y’all sure you have the right mailing address for me?

Landing in LA at 23, it felt like my life was finally beginning. That was partially because Los Angeles is the metropolis associated with everything that has ever fascinated me- old and new Hollywood, fallen glamour, mid-century modern architecture, curious wildlife and eccentric people remaking themselves in a city that has always indicated anything is possible- but it was also the very essence of the land itself, a place so unique as to inspire the creation of all of of these things. From the moment I landed in LA and moved into my first house- I felt remade, in the image of so many others who have been remade by the place. For the first time, NYC felt matched by an energy so fearsome that I was sure I’d return home as a new person. In many ways, I did. The city became the home I ran away too when my past became too dense. Each time, the clock started on life again. That’s what LA has been for many people, a place to start over, a place to fertilize a new version of themselves. But in that process, it became a home to many who could imagine a home nowhere else. LA has also given us the homes we occupy in our minds- the images flickering on our screens, the work of Eve Babitz and Joan Didion, the novels of James Ellroy, Danzy Senna, Francesca Lia Block (just to name a few) and the pop songs that define our memories of youth, from the Ronettes to Sonny & Cher to Paris singing The Stars Are Blind. And that’s only what’s visible to outsiders- it’s not speaking to the matrilineal culture of the indigenous Chumash people, the immigrant community of Boyle Heights, Altadena’s legacy of Black home ownership, the activism of California Coalition for Women Prisoners or the devotion to animal rescue that has filled LA with no kill shelters. It’s not speaking to the LA that cannot be contained in terms like “tinsel town” and “la la land.” Los Angeles has given us- has given me- so much, and it’s time to give back, to the people remaking their home yet again in the city that has become (or has always been) theirs. Please join @goodthinggoingprods in this bi-coastal drive to bring clothing and essentials to those who need them most right now. We love you Los Angeles.
