@ShondaLand Exclusive with Malcolm Venable (@mrmalcolmvee). Waithe’s recent two-episode arc on Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Catherine Fox’s (Debbie Allen) protégé Evynn Moore marked a kind of full-circle moment for Waithe: Back when she was assisting on Girlfriends, she came face-to-face with Allen, who was directing the series. Though their interaction was brief then, they have, all these years later, become friends and collaborators. And when Allen — who produced and directed A Different World, the ’80s sitcom set at the fictional Hillman College, which inspired the name of Waithe’s production company, Hillman Grad — asked Waithe to come and hang out at Grey’s, Waithe gladly accepted. The result: Waithe’s turn as Evynn, who put the Grey’s Anatomy team in an ethical quandary when she failed to disclose that her wife, who was in line for a new liver, had Alzheimer’s.
