Lesley-Ann Brandt Instagram – This was me as a kid in Apartheid. Attending segregated schools, living in segregated areas & getting a segregated education. Daughter of a mother who was forcibly removed from her home in District 6 when it was declared “white only”. Daughter of a father who resisted and was arrested more times than you can count. Granddaughter of man who with over 15 years on the job, was fired because a white English South African wouldn’t work under him. Not that long ago.
Afriforum is a fringe group of racists, much like the proud boys, who long for the return of the “old days”. The president of the United States would like you to believe that we have some kind of race war going on & has signed an executive order, after all his deportations, and offered, (let me clear my throat), “refugee status” to a small group of racist white South Africans. Le sigh.
While we are not perfect, we also don’t claim to be. The United States certainly isn’t, & while the remanence of that segregated system that plagued us for so long & the generational poverty is set in action is still pervasive, what we have achieved is something the world should admire. We have the most complex integration of any sports team in history. From being sanctioned & banned by the world for racist policies, to world champions & a true brotherhood that unites a country like no other. That’s what rugby means to us.
We celebrate our multiculturalism because it is our superpower. Our diverse voices IS our wealth. South Africa is called the rainbow nation for a reason. Our differences are inexplicably woven into the fabric of our nation but our differences unite us too. Our national anthem includes 5 languages. We speak 12 languages as a country. We celebrate all religions. We are home to the some of the most beautiful of African cultures. We are the birthplace of the most genetically diverse people in the world, scientifically proven. Our wildlife, our food, our wine, our music, our landscape, OUR culture.
We are EVERYTHING this American president & those who surround him fears, and more. ✊🏼✊🏿 ✊🏾🇿🇦 #southafrica
