In 2024, few characters left their mark on TV viewers as indelibly as @marisaabela_’s Yasmin in ‘Industry.’ In the HBO show—which centers on the professional, emotional, and sexual machinations of ruthless and wounded entry-level investment bankers—Abela plays a wounded sadist radiating a dangerously alluring beauty. The actor—and CULTURED Art & Film issue cover star—also stepped into the shoes of the legendary Amy Winehouse for last year’s ‘Black to Black.’
This March, she’ll make her spy flick debut in Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Black Bag,’ opposite Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender. As Clarissa, the newest member of a small unit within a British intelligence agency, Abela is most alive when under threat. In her CULTURED cover story, the actor admits to writer @haleymlotek that she gravitates toward characters who really let it “rip.” “All of the women I’ve played so far are desperately seeking control, a desire coming from a feeling of being on uneven ground,” Abela says.
