Misha Highstead Instagram – NASA has released an INCREDIBLE photo of a supersonic jet breaking the sound barrier. And it LITERALLY looks like it’s breaking a barrier!
The XB-1 civilian jet by Boom Supersonic flew over the Mojave desert at seven hundred and seventy-two miles per hour during a recent test.
At the point it crossed in front of the sun, a NASA team took photos via telescopes with special filters that can actually SEE distortions in the air – unlike the human eye!
And the image is WILD, with the air appearing to be pushed and stretched like a physical membrane.
It’s cool as hell, but there IS a reason, too! Being able to see what the air is doing could help the designers spot any inefficiencies and make the plane even FASTER!
In case you’re wondering, YES, Boom Supersonic IS working on supersonic COMMERCIAL airliners that’d get people to their destinations twice as fast as current flights! In fact, they already have a hundred and thirty orders and pre-orders from major airlines!
For the record, there hasn’t been a commercial supersonic plane since the last Concorde retired in 2003.
