Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a Baptist minister and prominent civil rights leader, was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929.
He spearheaded the first large-scale civil rights movement in the United States and became a symbol of the fight for equality both nationally and globally.
Among his significant contributions, King served as the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). His commitment to nonviolent protest and his powerful oratory were instrumental in dismantling the legal segregation of African Americans and were crucial to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In recognition of his efforts, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, along with numerous other accolades.
