I’ve been reflecting on the experience of making this film, and it feels fitting to share those thoughts on International Women’s Day. During prep, the archetype that came to mind over and over again—the one that shaped my approach to Roya—was Joan of Arc.
Like Joan, @roya.mahboob_ saw a future that didn’t yet exist, and with faith and incredible determination, fought to make it real—not just for herself, but for an entire generation of girls. She’s an extraordinary figure who has changed the course of history.
And just—wow. I am deeply inspired by all the extraordinary women involved in bringing this story to life— @roya.mahboob_ , or co-writer @elahamah (played beautifully by @yekta_heidari) , our incredible all-star robotics team!!! (@amberafzali @saramalalrowe @niiinz @mariam.saraj), all the real Afghan Dreamers who paved the way for this story to exist. Behind the camera and behind the scenes, we had so many outstandingly talented women who made this film what it is—from production and camera to hair and makeup, costume, and every other department on set. The women on this crew brought their skill, artistry, and dedication to every moment of this film, and I am so grateful to each of them.
Nothing ever happens unless someone dreams it first. And yet, it takes a team, a village, to bring that dream to life. Our brilliant director, @billguttentag, led this film with kindness, generosity, and a deep belief in Roya’s story. His vision and dedication made this entire project possible.
Ali, Roya’s brother and coach of the Afghan Dreamers, mentored these girls and fought for their right to dream bigger. @nooringulamgaus brought his story to life with such beauty and sensitivity. Thank you @angelstudios_inc inc who’s belief in this story helped bring it to audiences. And so many others in front and behind the camera that serve as a reminder of the power of allyship.
