The doctor, reflecting on his journey, shared that after the initial shock, anger, and sadness, he found solace in a small but powerful inner voice—a voice that grew stronger as his faith outshone his fear. This conversation deeply moved McNeil, who is not only a songwriter but also works in oncology biotech, connecting with doctors and patients on a daily basis. In a writing session with DiLuigi, the duo transformed this story into a mantra for anyone navigating hardship. “Yes I Can” became more than a phrase; it’s a rallying cry—a reminder of the strength within us all. The song’s driving energy, punctuated by its infectious “oh-oh-oh” refrain, embodies the spirit of a victorious warrior, encouraging listeners to persevere no matter the odds. McNeil reflects on the physician’s legacy, saying, “He never got to hear the song he inspired, but he lives within it—within every word, every note. And so do we all. We can stand in defiance and roar, ‘Yes, I Can!’ in the face of fear.” DiLuigi adds, “One of my favorite lyrics is, ‘I’ve been a heartbreak soldier,’ because haven’t we all? I’ve been following the terrible news about the earthquake in Myanmar last week. It has taken the lives of thousands of people, and many more are injured or still in need of rescue.
