Being a woman is already complicated and full of contradictions as is, but with the rise of incel culture and misogyny (being brought to light at the moment by shows like ‘Adolescence’), the treatment towards women and girls only appears to be getting worse. And yet, despite this escalating violence, so many of us often sexualise or objectify ourselves without even realising – myself very much included. I want to know why women and girls do this, and discover where this need comes from.
This is a book about what it feels to be treated as a sex object since childhood and the role I’ve had to play in my own self-objectification and suffering; whether sexualising yourself for money can ever be empowering, or whether it’s exploitative; as well as questioning my own feminism and what I believed empowerment to be. I hope ‘Flesh’ brings awareness to the ways women internalise sexual objectification and the impact it has on their overall wellbeing.
