She grew up IN the Korean War that my Grandfather (Harabeoji) fought in & my (Halmeoni) Grandmother nursed & was a journalist in. My mom came to America July 12, 1978 & became a US Citizen in 1980 right in time to vote the very first time! She has voted every election ever since! #𝟏- My Great Great Great Grandma Adeline was a slave until the age of 15. NEVER got to vote. #𝟐- Great Great Grandma Maggie, was 68 years old when she PAID for & cast her first & ONLY Presidential Vote in 1968 (she died in 1970) & along with her daughter, my great grandma Clotee #𝟑 . They were a few of the first people to vote in Hattiesburg Mississippi but not without death threats/fear tactics & had to be escorted by armored guards in order to do so. #𝟒- My Grandma Retha Bell was the first of them all to vote freely & safely at the age of 40. ME? I voted the 1st time at the age of 18 in 1996 & HAVE EVERY election since!. My dad entered the US Army at 18 & fought in the Vietnam War… he has proudly served this Country who hasn’t always been kind or fair to him, yet he VOTES EVERY ELECTION & in between! These generations of Black women (& my daddy) with DEEP ROOTS in slavery & Jim Crow in the Deep South, have defeated so many odds & exercised their American rights to vote as soon as they were able to. People bred from the country understand the deeper roots of racism & the tribulations people like Trump & his supporters have caused & those city / privileged bred black folks may not , so I don’t fully condemn those that are lost & uneducated in why their support for the opposition is hurtful… but me?? My KINFOLK? We’re from the south & my mom is an immigrant / US citizen ! My ancestors were slaves who had no choice in anything. So how we move in life is different PERIOD.
