Emily Swallow Instagram – It has been two months since the Palisades and Eaton fires. Though the headlines have moved on, thousands of lives remain in turmoil. In this space, I continue to see many people walking The Way.
On #thisisthewaywednesday I want to celebrate the humble generosity of volunteers I met through @samaritanspurse. The day @chadkimball76 and I suited up, there were a handful of Angelenos helping their neighbors, but I was astounded at the number of people who’d paid their own way to travel here from out of town to spend their nights sleeping on cots and their days in tyvek suits just to help homeowners find some tiny relic of the lives they had before the fires- a ring here, a child’s tea set there, a tiny nativity figurine – in the wake of the incredible destruction, these mementoes are invaluable. This tedious work of sifting through ash is simple but profound when an item is recovered.
I have heard that at least a thousand homeowners have signed up for these free services offered by Samaritan’s Purse. At the end of March, what is left in the Palisades will be bulldozed to start rebuilding, so tue clock is ticking. If you live in LA, consider signing up!
