Unlike most vultures, the palm-nut vulture (Gypohierax angolensis) thrives on a diet primarily made up of palm fruits—especially the nuts of oil and raffia palms. This rare dietary adaptation makes it a crucial seed disperser, helping to sustain the very forests it depends on. While these striking black-and-white raptors occasionally consume fish, carrion, and invertebrates, their fruit-heavy diet sets them apart as one of the most ecologically distinctive birds of prey.
In Gombe Stream National Park, where JGI has been conducting groundbreaking chimpanzee research since 1960, the palm-nut vulture is part of the rich and complex ecosystem we’ve observed for decades. These expert gliders can often be seen soaring over the park’s lush forests and lakeshore—one of many species that contribute to the intricate tapestry of life supporting Gombe’s chimpanzees and biodiversity.
Our long-time scientific adviser, Bill Wallauer, captured these stunning images during one of his many trips filming wild chimpanzee behavior in Gombe. Bill’s work to document the species of Gombe has taught us so much about this awe-inspiring ecosystem, and inspired and informed our work to protect it. 🌍💚
