Janet Mbugua Instagram – #InternationalWomensDay – Kenyan Women Of Firsts: 4/4, the final one ๐๐พ
Prof. Wangari Maathai: I can recall first seeing Wangari Maathai on the news in the 90โs.
As a little girl, her grit and determination made an imprint in my memory, against the inhumane way in which she was being handled, as she fought for Kenyaโs soil. I would later keep up to date with where she was and what she was doing, quietly following her journey and staying enamored by her.
So when I met her face to face for the first time in 2009, a year after reading her memoir Unbowed, itโs the first time Iโve ever been struck to the point of babbling. I finally managed to say, โYou mean a lot. To say many of us. Iโm a Journalist, I was on KTNโ. โYes Janet, I think Iโve watched youโ. And I was good from then on ๐
Seriously, I might not have stayed in advocacy/ activism were it not for the reminder that the fight for our rights, as women, as gatekeepers of our environment, for all human rights, is something that that we have to keep doing; and we do what we can in our own little way (her story of the Hummingbird) to keep going. I consider her one of the most influential figures in my life. Hereโs to giving her her flowers ๐
