Prof. Wangari Maathai: I can recall first seeing Wangari Maathai on the news in the 90’s.
As a little girl, her grit and determination made an imprint in my memory, against the inhumane way in which she was being handled, as she fought for Kenya’s soil. I would later keep up to date with where she was and what she was doing, quietly following her journey and staying enamored by her.
So when I met her face to face for the first time in 2009, a year after reading her memoir Unbowed, it’s the first time I’ve ever been struck to the point of babbling. I finally managed to say, “You mean a lot. To say many of us. I’m a Journalist, I was on KTN”. “Yes Janet, I think I’ve watched you”. And I was good from then on 😃
Seriously, I might not have stayed in advocacy/ activism were it not for the reminder that the fight for our rights, as women, as gatekeepers of our environment, for all human rights, is something that that we have to keep doing; and we do what we can in our own little way (her story of the Hummingbird) to keep going. I consider her one of the most influential figures in my life. Here’s to giving her her flowers 💐
