Lola Kirke Instagram – I didn’t name my album “Trailblazer” because I think I am one. I named it “Trailblazer” because I have finally begun to scrap together enough courage to suggest to myself I *could* be, whenever my brain starts on the old familiar tape that ceaselessly declares I’m just a failure. Enough humility to entertain the idea that the old and aching stories I have about myself may be wrong. Enough creativity to start to write some new ones.
Songwriting is one of the most extraordinary ways we weird humans have found to capture these wisps of fantasy and grow them into something concrete and alive enough to become a shared reality. Songwriting transforms old wounds into cool scars you’re proud to wear because they make you look a little tougher. In short, songwriting is fucking magic.
With the help of people I cannot believe even let me in the room with them—@thesilverseas chief among them—but also @mscaitlinrose, @lizrose0606, @jasonnixmusic, @ashleymonroemusic, @nataliehemby, @delaneyramsdellmusic, @jondecious and many others, I got to write songs that helped me let go of some old stuff and walk a little lighter (which if you’re me, is that kind of statement you make right before you slip on a banana peel into a steaming pile of shit. But that’s ok! Because that’s funny. And it’ll make you stronger).
That’s why there have been so many photos of me as this goddamn clown. The spine of the clown’s humor is that they are always trying and always failing. But it never stops them. They are resilient little fuckers, which is perhaps why they are so threatening to people. They don’t back down. The clown is also historically the truth teller. They just do it with a sense of humor.
Trailblazer is all yours now. This is what I aspire to give you with it: something true. Something fun. Something that helps you switch the stale tapes out and dares you to write some new ones all on your own. Don’t forget: when you feel like a failure, well baby you’re a trailblazer.
