What’s beautiful about this dish is that the coconut milk broth gets in between all of the layers of leaves, and as the cabbage cooks down it gets even sweeter. Serve it over rice with a simple piece of fish, or grilled marinated tofu. A healthy and comforting winter meal.

On a recent day when I had a standup set in Brooklyn, I found myself so nervous I showed up early, so I decided to calm my anxiety by checking out this cute spot on the way. I’ve always had a curiosity about Colombian food, I had friends in high school (hi Jane!) who were Colombian and I loved eating in their homes. So I was excited to take a field trip to @patiotropicalnyc to meet chef Stephanie Bonnin who had imbued her eatery tucked behind a pottery store with exceptional warmth and sumptuous aromas of delicious food. I was happy to have another version of a tamal made with rice as well as the refreshing hibiscus tea, the empanadas ( I took one to go for later), and a really beguiling dessert which was warm, crispy, and flecked with fennel seeds. It took me a second to wrap my head around the hoja santa oil on top of the whipped cream, as I have never had an herb oil with dessert — but that’s the beauty of other people’s food. There is always something new to learn and share. Go visit them and save some money for the exquisite Colombian pottery, as you’ve seen in my own kitchen I have many pots to cook beans lentils and stew in, so I resisted the temptation to add more to the crowded shelves.
