In a week of unrelenting devastation, despair, and loss, we suddenly said goodbye to my beloved grandmother. The grief has been shocking, paused and compounded by friends losing their homes, losing their communities, and watching the city that raised me ravaged by flames, day after day after day. It feels inappropriate to grieve right now, when so many are suffering the monumental loss of their homes, communities, mementos, and lives that were intact just a week ago. The heaviness is cruel, yet the kindness of friends and strangers is overwhelming. My grandmother left with the memory of Brentwood and the Palisades, her home of 91 years, in tact.
