For this years #worldmentalhealthday I took the opportunity to sit down with expert Dr Britt Wray (Stanford university, @gen_dread ) to talk about something that a lot of people are experiencing at the moment, called ‘Climate Anxiety’. Climate anxiety is a response to the climate crisis that is increasingly being seen across all age groups, particularly in younger people. Although it is not classified as a mental illness per se, climate anxiety has been shown to trigger and worsen other mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. My heart aches for everyone affected by the fires in LA. I’m in awe of the community that has come together to lift each other in this dark moment. As the news cycles slow, it is easy to feel isolated from this ongoing emergency, but what is happening in LA impacts all of us. Those who have lost their homes now asking “where do we live?” pose a question we all must ask ourselves if we continue to do nothing about this climate emergency. If the fires in LA are terrifying you, it’s time to turn that fear into action.
