Meshell Ndegeocello ha sobrevivido a lo mejor y lo peor que una carrera en la música puede ofrecer. Ha dejado de lado los géneros en favor de la originalidad, la fama por la longevidad y las tendencias musicales por verdades musicales. Sus seguidores han aprendido a esperar lo inesperado y a acompañarla en sus viajes sonoros a través del soul, el R&B, el jazz, el hip-hop y el rock, todos ellos unidos por la búsqueda del amor, la justicia, el respeto y la resolución. Esas exploraciones sonoras han desafiado y redefinido las expectativas sobre las mujeres, los artistas queer y la música negra durante más de 30 años, y sigue siendo una de las pocas mujeres que componen la música, cantan las canciones y lideran la banda.
