Roan Curtis Instagram – my dad’s store @eugene_choo opened its doors 25 years ago today. he started it with his sister, fiona and it’s one of my favourite places on earth, which i know sounds weird to say about a clothing store, but i’ve spent so many hours there that it’s really one of the places that raised me. as a toddler hiding under the desk and behind the clothes, as a kid doing my homework in an empty change room after school, as a teenager working every sunday (and definitely not hungover). i was lucky enough to be asked to write a special 25th anniversary newsletter for the store and i don’t think i could more concisely summarize what it means to me than i did there, so i’ll just put it here:
I always say that while Eugene Choo is a store, it’s always felt like a home as well. A place where people pop in to chat in good times and bad, where three children were basically raised (much to their chagrin at the time), where friendships have been forged, art has been made and appreciated, parties have been thrown (shhhh, be cool), and at least two people have met the love of their life (not to brag, but we even have a Choo baby as a result). It’s a store made special, of course, by its very stylish contents, but more than that, it’s made special by every customer and staff member that’s crossed its threshold or lost their footing when there was that big hole in the floor for a couple of years. And while we no longer write our receipts by hand (thank god), some things never change — and that’s the importance of you, our community. For this, we say the biggest and most sincere thank you.
