Maria Bakalova Instagram – WHAT STAYS AFTER | TRAILER The premiere will be on 08/05/25 The short film @whatstaysafter is about a boy on the verge of the immediate consequences of the death of his sister in a car crash. The story is strongly dictated by an accident in which I lost my father. My dedication at the beginning of the film goes to him and everyone on his side of the family, whom I lost a few years later. In the film, the tragic circumstances of my past intertwine with the political situation in Bulgaria today – the despair of corruption, the lack of justice and the inevitable resignation to it all. The main character faces the pain of losing a loved one, discovers truths he is not ready for, makes choices that will completely change his life, and feels guilt that wastes him away. He looks for a way out but remains trapped in the events. He would rather run away – yet, he stays. It is the staying that embodies the reason I tell this story. The power to keep going when it seems impossible.
