PENNIES
The fountain was a graveyard
Filled with corpses of dreams
With all its pennies gleaming
Like fools gold in a stream
A girl wished for a pony
And a farmer wanted time
He had his field of horses
And she had her whole life
People with their pennies
Little prayers trying to pay for
The promise of wholeness
Spare change for a change
She’s wanting and she’s waiting
But with no hope she’ll be drowning
She says better my penny than me
The fountain it belonged to
An old man with big hands
The mountain of money
He spent it on his plan
To rebuild and restore and
Make it better than before
And all the people clapped
Until their little hands were sore
My makeup made a promise
It would make me so pretty
And my books made me a promise
They would make sure I was witty
And the movies all sell me
The dream of New York City
And online they tell me
Who to praise and who to pity
And she cries “if only!”
Then what, you’d be less lonely?
Your path would be less stony and
Your grave would be less bony?
“But once I get my wish,
It’s then that I’ll be whole!”
She’s speaking like her soul
Is in the shape of a keyhole
People with their pennies
Little prayers trying to pay for
A promise of wholeness
Spare change for a change
She’s wanting and she’s waiting
But with no hope she’ll be drowning
