Why “AMMA” Matters
Mental illness constitutes one of the most neglected public health crises in Nigeria today.
According to Nigeria’s Psychiatric Association
and the World Health Organization, one in four Nigerians, roughly 50 million people, will experience a diagnosable mental health disorder, yet only about 10–25% of those individuals ever receive professional care.
The shortage of professionals is alarming: Nigeria has fewer than 300 psychiatrists serving a population of over 200 million, a ratio of approximately 1 psychiatrist per 700,000 Nigerians, well below WHO’s recommended benchmark of 1 per 10,000.
Stigma remains a profound barrier. Cultural misconceptions often attribute mental illness to witchcraft, evil spirits, or moral weakness,
with families sometimes seeking treatment from religious or traditional healers instead of mental health professionals….
