The Supreme Court’s new order to remove Delhi street dogs from the streets and send them to “shelters” in 8 weeks is not only wrong in law, it’s cruel. There are hardly any real shelters, no proper vet hospitals, and very few licensed vets. The Animal Birth Control program — which should have sterilised and vaccinated dogs — was ignored while money meant for it was wasted. The media has spread big, unproven numbers about rabies deaths, creating fear. Even our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has spoken about protecting pashu-pakshi (animals and birds). Now, dogs like Bura, Rani, Kalu, Brownie, Angel, and Whitie — who are like family to us — may end up in cages, starving, and dying from disease. Our culture and religion teach us to feed and care for animals, and our laws, including the 2023 Supreme Court orders, say community dogs have the right to live where they are. This order ignores both law and humanity. But this fight is not over. We will stand together, protect them, and challenge this.
