The recent order by the Apex Court of India to confine 500,000 dogs to shelters is a grave injustice, effectively condemning these innocent animals to death due to system’s inability to shoulder the financial burden, which could exceed ₹10,000 crore annually. The ongoing failure to implement effective rabies vaccination and sterilization programs raises serious questions about the allocation of resources specifically dedicated to animal welfare. Especially with a budget of ₹7,000 crores for 2025 ,if utilized properly, could significantly control the stray dog population .
The presence of abandoned government buildings SPCA s and insufficient infrastructure highlights systemic mismanagement, yet the court chose to penalize the dogs rather than hold municipal authorities accountable for their misuse of funds.
Meanwhile, dedicated caregivers and NGOs are left to shoulder the responsibilities of sterilization and vaccination, often at their own expense, while the media perpetuates misleading narratives that influence judicial decisions. It is imperative to mobilize public support by contacting the Honorable Chief Justice of India to advocate for a more humane and responsible approach to this pressing issue
