As a 90s teen, when it came to fashion I felt adrift as the landscape dulled and the grunge movement set in. I remember going to Urban Outfitters and being confused that I didn’t like anything we were supposed to. I loved vintage, but it was too polyester and self-aware. I missed the hand-me-down Guess jeans and oversized Esprit bags of my youth. It didn’t seem like there was an antidote in sight until I became acquainted with @betseyjohnson’s work. I doubt anyone reading is unfamiliar, but Betsey’s joie de vivre, rock ‘n’ roll femininity, and off-the-charts sense of play represented a new dawn to me. I spent the first real money I ever made on pieces by her.
I was beyond thrilled to be invited to Betsey‘s showroom and attend a gallery party for her new foray into painting, which naturally was incredible. When I met Betsey, I felt as starstruck as I’ve ever been. She could not have been more warm, open, engaging and KIND. I was thrilled to find she’s tiny like me.
I told her it was as if she’d looked at current trends and announced: ‘We MUST do better.’ She laughed. Betsey’s perspective feels decisive, positive, and passionately in love with life. She’s a woman with a neon heart.
