Trying to put this experience moment into some words…. My parents came to the US from Iran when I was a baby. They encouraged their only child to pursue a very statistically unpromising path- not just because they’re v good parents- but I think because they understood the power of art. I grew up in a house learning that when you’ve left your country of origin you can still bring its culture with you. Often it’s the only thing you can bring. And so I grew up surrounded by Persian art, music, and poetry. My life has been richer for it. And this country is richer for every immigrant who brings their culture here, every marginalized voice who tells their story. English is a play about longing- to belong, to be understood. It asks us to see the world through someone else’s very different experience. It’s an understatement to say we’re living through a time of fear. It’s shaping what we say- and what we stay silent about. And I want to believe that being an Artist is about being brave – not to comfort power but to make space for contradiction, for discomfort, and always for truth. Through its ups and downs, I’m grateful to get to do this work- very imperfectly trying to find meaning in our brutal world. To be in community with my English family and the other artists I’ve met who pursue story-telling and truth- that’s my why. That’s the work. A Tony nomination was the cherry on top of an already really good sundae. It’s been a trip (and if I never see another high heel, it won’t be soon enough). 📸: @emiliomadrid
