When @ashnb1, @ajanaomi_king and I were in middle school we were in the kind of drill team that also did jazz, ballet, flags and something called “novelty” (picture arts-and-craft costumes and a lot of earnestness). We sang in every talent show despite one of us not being able to carry a tune (🙋🏾‍♀️) and wrote about boys we liked in a book we passed back and forth in science lab. We had very big dreams that we took very seriously. When I finished writing THE WILDERNESS, a book about friendship and Black womanhood, I dreamed that my very busy and impressive junior high school friends would read my audiobook, and they said yes. I am so proud of them, not just because they have won and been nominated for Emmys and have been part of so many successful projects, but because they are still essentially the girls they were in junior high school.
