In Mexico, evil characters in telenovelas are as adored as they are hated. Chantal Andere knows this well: she has been in the collective imagination for decades for her roles as Angélica Narváez in Marimar and Estefanía Bracho in La usurpadora. There are still those who remember that scene in Marimar where Angélica forced Thalía’s character to pick up a bracelet from the mud with her teeth and, to top it all off, accused her of being a thief, a humiliation that led to the burning of her shack and the death of her grandparents.
It was an act of villainy that marked an entire generation of television viewers. “I’ve been very happy with my villains,” the actress admits. “At some point, I said, ‘Yeah, I’d like to do something different.’ Not because I’m denying it, but to challenge and test myself.” She found that “something different” in musical theater, a genre she gravitated to as a child due to her training in singing and dancing.
There, far from the malice of her antagonists, Andere has revealed herself as a well-rounded performer: she has sung live, danced, and moved characters who have nothing to do with the icy stares on TV. In “Little Shop of Horrors,” for example, she plays Audrey, a fragile and endearing woman who allows her to show unexpected vulnerability. “There are children who ask me if I’m okay. That’s never happened to me before; on television, I was the one who caused them to suffer,” she comments.
When asked if today’s villains carry the same weight as those of her generation, She answered no, “Before, we all watched the same two or three channels, and soap operas were a topic of conversation at dinner. Today, there are networks, platforms, and endless options. It’s difficult for a character to have the same collective impact. Before, the good character was naive, even silly, and the bad character was very clear, almost cartoonish. Today, that’s no longer the case: the good character is more vivid, even with a touch of villainy, and the villains have more human motivations. No one in real life is that bad or that good.” SUN
