The Mission: Impossible finale might have just arrived in cinemas, but it took five years and multiple pandemic shutdowns to get to our screens. Sitting on Zoom with a rare ability to look sublime through a laptop camera, Hayley Atwell takes us through the journey — starting with being scouted by director Christopher McQuarrie for a “particular quality”, through to the adventurous ad lib approach taken on set. But between juggling motherhood, theatre work and her role in one of action’s largest franchises, Atwell has developed as a person as much as an actor. “I have grown enormously as an individual,” she says. With this refreshing self-assuredness, it’s no surprise that Atwell is determined to pick roles based on casts that inspire her. “As I develop myself as an actor and just as a person, I was clear about the kind of people I wanted to work with,” she explains with characteristic thoughtfulness. The approach isn’t a huge surprise, though. From Agent Carter to The Duchess, Atwell has always understood that craft trumps stardom — and that women don’t hit their peak powers until they’ve lived enough to wield them.
