In making The Last of Us’ most harrowing scene yet, Kaitlyn Dever’s life and work collided devastatingly. In the end, it helped her process the worst period of her life, following her mother’s death.
Dever began filming HBO’s post-apocalyptic thriller three days after her mother’s funeral. It was the biggest job of her career so far, and she started with its most pivotal scene to date – in which her character, Abby, an emotionally ravaged militant, tortures and murders Joel, the show’s beloved anti-hero, played by Pedro Pascal.
“I think what makes Abby so powerful and so overwhelming is the darkness inside her, and because her grief is so intense,” Dever says.
Dever’s performance is visceral and heartbreaking. You can’t help but feel Abby’s pain. And yet, she can barely recall how she did it: “When I watch it back, I’m like, Whoa… Who even is that?”
