When I moved from Havana to Milan, Piazza Duomo was the first place I visited. A few years from now, it’ll be more time that I’ve lived far away from my family than with them. I left 16 years ago! I was wearing flip-flops, had no money in my pocket, didn’t know anything or anyone in the world. It wasn’t easy: it was cold, I had to learn another language, another culture, and deal with people who wanted to take advantage of me… Moving forward (scroll to the last videos), now I’m enjoying the same square from a car with my driver taking me around Milan. It’s been 16 years, and oh boy, I have stories to tell. I’m getting emotional writing this because it’s been an extremely unpredictable rollercoaster that could have gone very wrong. But here I am, working across continents, doing what I love, collaborating with people I truly admire who inspire me every day. Getting paid more than I could imagine, holding three citizenships, speaking three languages fluently, and married to the best man in the world. I haven’t lost my essence or my integrity, and I’ve been trying to lift up whoever is around me, because I love them all. My happiness isn’t as important if I turn around and the person next to me is going through a tough moment, is depressed, or can’t find their way in life. Life is about choices, and the ability to choose what’s really true for you without external noise. You might think: why all these reflections just from passing by a square with a driver? Well, it’s significant for me for so many reasons. Find your reasons to be proud of yourself. Your journey isn’t just about doing things to fill your day.
