Nikki Giovanni greatly influenced me growing up. Her books were mainstays on my library check out tab. My first pre teen monologue while wearing braces in the south was “Ego Trippin”. A bombastic historical monologue, saying certain words outloud shifts who you are. Remember that. She filled this young girl up with so much love for freedom and the fighters for freedom and artists, sober optimism and observation, the sincere unbought kind… without consensus. I love Nikki. We’ve seen her dialogue with James Baldwin everywhere, her resonance only deepens. How grateful I am for her. Now that I think about it, I haven’t touched the bindings of books I own from her in a long time, I’ve been traveling and away from home. It’s all on my phone or the cloud now but there’s nothing like READING and reciting poems beside ur bed at night. A poem can quickly take you to another world. see the humor in your own…She also loved hip hop, this little lady, she got it, understood what it was, what it could be and why it was beautiful at a time when respectability politics was frowning a lil bit…So many memories. So many new ideas. Those books With Polaroids as place holders and little pictures or notes drawn in the margins. If you’re unfamiliar with her work and you don’t care much for reading, I recommend listening to them. you can listen to her recite her work. Thank you Nikki🙏🏾 I don’t know where ya’ll are today, it’s been raining pretty hard here. Yesterday-night, I walked in it. Got caught in it actually but chose not to rush or run for cover. We just walked together.
