Patrisse Cullors Instagram – My heart is full as I share that my piece ‘Oturupon Meji’ is part of LACMA’s Imagining Black Diasporas exhibition. I am deeply honored to stand alongside such an incredible collective of Black artists, each of us weaving our own stories of heritage, resilience, and vision. Being included in this show is a profound privilege – a celebration of the threads that connect us across time and oceans.
For me, this piece is a conversation with my ancestors. ‘Oturupon Meji’ carries the name of a sacred Yoruba text of wisdom and comes from the odu ifa, and I’ve carefully embroidered that ancestral verse into a vintage mud cloth from Mali — bridging continents and generations in a single work.
