In 2010, when I left home for the first time to study in Bangalore, I was stepping into an unfamiliar world, unsure of what life had in store. And then, I met her—the girl everyone called the “Barbie Girl” of the hostel. I was curious, intrigued… what was she like? She wasn’t from my college, but fate had a funny way of bringing us together.
One day, we started talking, and before I knew it, we were laughing—really laughing. Not the kind of polite laughter you share with acquaintances, but the kind that makes your stomach hurt, your eyes water, and your heart feel at home. In that laughter, I found something rare—comfort, warmth, a sister I never knew I needed.
We never had to talk about serious things, we never had to impress each other. With her, I was just me. Silly, stupid, loud, crazy—completely, unapologetically myself. And that’s the best kind of friendship—the one where you don’t have to try.
Over the years, life happened. We grew, we stumbled, we faced storms that tried to take that laughter away. But we held on. Through every heartbreak, every struggle, every moment of self-doubt—we found our way back to each other, back to that same, ridiculous laughter that first bonded us.
She is my home. No matter where life takes us, no matter how much time passes, whenever I’m with her, I feel like I’ve come home.
Fifteen years of memories, and a lifetime to go. I can already picture us in our 60s and 80s—two crazy grandmas, laughing until our dentures fall out, still making reels and proving to the world that some things never change.
Shauny, you are magic. You are light, love, and everything beautiful. I don’t know what I did to deserve a best friend like you, but I do know that I’m forever grateful.
