Our ancestors would ask: How are the children? It was a test: a society can be measured by how well its children are.
I like to think the fine prophets of one Wu Tang had that deep in their knowing when they, too, said they were for the children. Maybe Whitney felt the same.
It’s a question we must keep asking—and holding ourselves accountable to the answer.
Yall already know what the answer is: not well.
Nearly 10 million children are living in poverty. Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children. 1 in 5 high schoolers report considering suicide.
But the sickness is not in our children—it’s in our systems. Our children are brilliant. Bold. Creative and resilience. They are joy and genius that deserves defending and nourishing.
I’m so honored to join my friends and colleagues in the fight at @childdefender1973 (follow us!) as their new Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer. To work alongside brilliant leaders like my brother @revdrstarsky and @sabrady69 , to stand in the light of the legacies of Marian Wright Edelman and MaryLee Allen, to build with some of the sharpest, most passionate minds and leaders across the country, and most importantly, to do what matters alongside the children, youth and families who lead this movement?
I am abundantly blessed.
