I had this book – Motor Spirit by Jarett Kobeck – recommended to me some years back. It was a deep dive into the Zodiac Killings. After a sordid youth spent studying crime and violence and trying to make sense of it, I’d grown weary of true crime books that make money at the expense of the real victims. If there’s no advocacy, what’s the point?
But this book was different. Kobeck was a relentless and outside-of-the-box researcher, and I appreciated the thoughtfulness and intelligence behind the very new theories he presented.
So when my friend @rabiasquared2 invited me on her podcast @rabiaandellyn to discuss a case, I jumped at the opportunity to discuss Motor Spirit and its sequel How to Find Zodiac.
My fandom paid off. Jarett and I got in touch and started discussing the case (which means I just asked 8 billion questions and he very patiently answered.) Rabia had us BOTH on a follow up episode, where Jarett gave updates on the investigation. I was like an excited kid bringing a parent to career day. “Tell em about the fanzines! Oh oh, tell em about the Ren Faire!” IYKYK.
And so in the last couple years, I continue to gift his books to people and keep hoping there are ways for us to work together in the future.
So color me flabbergasted this morning when I hear that my old pal SOLVED THE KRYPTOS CODE!

But seriously. That’s just insane. Jarett worked with a friend of his and solved this decades long mystery. And so I’m gonna spend my Friday night checking out this interview he did with @zona.motel .
The world can be dark and cold and overwhelming. So make a point of meeting interesting people and telling them you like their work and then cheering for them.
Jarett. Whatever you’re solving next, I want in.
