Julie Andrews Instagram – It’s been an age since I’ve posted – I am immersed in a writing project. But today, I have to stop everything and convey my heartbreak at the plight of the immigrant children, innocents drowning in our political quagmire. I find it hard to sleep at night for thought of them. Where do I rush? What can I do? How I can I help? The damage that has been done to them, and that continues to be done, will leave indelible scars; lifelong feelings of abandonment, rage, anxiety, despair, lack of faith or trust in humanity. I am sure there are kind and considerate people doing their best to care for them at this time – but nothing can replace familial love, the security of leaning against a beloved family member and knowing that there is a place to nestle, to trust, to rest. Will these little ones ever be reunited with their loved ones? Do their families know where they are, how to retrieve them? Will they have the resources to do so? And even if they are reunited, will these children ever trust again? Can they surmount the emotional trauma of this horrific experience? If not, I fear they may one day roam in our midst, having become the personification of the problems that these misguided efforts claim to address.
