Words can’t even begin to describe what an immense honour it is to receive a doctorate from my very own @yorkuniversity. I’m truly having a hard time processing it.
When I started my career in entertainment, I was terrified. Terrified of whether I’d make something of myself… and even more terrified of whether I’d make my parents proud. We’ve all heard the stereotype about Brown parents wanting their kids to be a doctor, lawyer, or engineer, and let’s be honest, it’s usually true. But that’s because, to them, those paths represented stability. And at the end of the day, all parents really want is for their kids to be safe and able to make a living.
I went against the grain in every possible way. But the universe has a wild sense of humour… because somehow, this path led me to bring home a PhD after all.
I’m so grateful I could give them this moment after everything they’ve given me.
