Pepi Sonuga Instagram – My grandfather passed a few days ago, and he’s being buried today. He was 98 years old, sharp, elegant, and cognitive until the very end. Because of that, I wasn’t sad at first. I was happy about his life. But this morning, it hit me.
He was brilliant, elegant, formidable, and endlessly complex. I was obsessed with “leveling with him”, trying to speak his language, to see how his mind worked. He got a kick out of it too, even if the manners of his era weren’t quite prepared for my modern openness.
Him: When I was your age, I didn’t even look my father in the eye when talking to him, let alone ask him questions about his person.”
Me: “Yes grandpa, but… that’s not… normal 🥲” lol
In our culture, there are many unspoken rules and formalities that separate parent from child emotionally, and even as a little girl I never understood why.
By the time I became a woman, we’d found our rhythm: part tradition, part friendship, and a whole lot of love.
